FIELD DAY 2001 @ KA2BEO Field Day 2001 was our eighth consecutive Field Day since 1994, and it turned out to be our second best regarding the number of people, contacts, and points. The rain was heavy at times, but that didn't spoil our fun. Once again, we didn't bother with VHF, UHF, or packet contacts. We demonstrated the operation of slow-scan television (SSTV) for a second year, and had our first information booth setup for this year. However, we didn't make any QRP or natural-power contacts. Plenty of 12-volt car batteries provided all of the necessary power. However, we still managed to get 400 bonus points again this year. I brought out a newly-acquired straight key from Bulgaria to try some hand-keying, but we ended up sticking with the keyer only. The ARRL pins for this Field Day were available early, so everyone was badged for this year's event. And, up to seven out of the twelve participants were inspired to learn the Morse code after this year's Field Day event. Bill, KB2RAR and John, N2PHX are even planning to upgrade now. The convenience of an in-ground pool at the operating site gave us some relief from the summer heat. Overall, this Field Day was another successful weekend of fun. You'll hear from us again next June. 73, Rob, KA2BEO.
