NOTE: These Hungarian denars are hammered silver coins that were known as “Maddonnenmunzen”, to differentiate them from earlier medieval Hungarian "Shield" coins. The new design marked the beginning of the Renaissance in Hungary. These coins were hand made by Magyar craftsmen (from the Volga River area) under the authority of one of several reigning monarchs at the time. The coins were minted during the termoil between the Ottoman Turks and the Austrians. After 1526, Royal Hungary was part of the Habsburg Empire (House of Habsburg, Austria).

Predecessors to the earliest ruler listed above include: Maximilian I (born 1459, reigned 1477-1519, died 1519) and Charles V (born 1500, reigned 1506-1556, died 1558).
Successors to the latest ruler listed above include: Ferdinand III (born 1608, reigned 1625-1657, died 1657) and Leopold I (born 1640, reigned 1655-1705, died 1705).
